The countdown is over, the champagne is on ice and Professor Brian Cox is heading our way. It can only mean one thing…The Forum has officially opened! The £27million project will give Southend a state-of-the-art library and brand new learning facilities, providing residents and students with access to books, academic records and over 100 computer terminals.
A joint project between the Council, the University of Essex and South Essex College, The Forum really does have something for everyone. Whether you fancy browsing for an old classic to get your teeth into, are looking for the latest research papers on molecular biology or fancy hearing BBC journalist George Alagiah talk about the global food crisis, you should definitely check it out.
However, before any of us can explore The Forum and experience everything it has to offer, we need to know how to get there. As you would expect, we have some ideas about that!
- X marks the spot
Before you head out the door, make sure you know where you’re going with a quick look at Google Maps. As you can see, The Forum is right in the heart of Southend in Elmer Square, just off the High Street and around the corner from the University of Essex and South Essex College.
- Walk this way
If you live near the town centre, a visit to The Forum is the perfect excuse to stretch your legs and get a bit of fresh air. You could head over after dropping your kids at school or pop in on your way to the Royals to get some early Christmas shopping done.
- The wheels on the bus go round and round
The nearest bus stop to The Forum is Warrior Square, a very short walk away through the square and across the High Street and Chichester Road. Alternatively, you can get off the bus on London Road and walk past Sainsbury’s and down to The Forum along College Way. Plus, any bus travelling to the town centre goes to the Travel Centre, which is just a 10 minute walk from The Forum.
- Get the express
We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to train stations in Southend. Why not grab a seat on the 10.24 from Rochford to Southend Victoria, just a seven minute stroll from The Forum? Or you could jump on the 10.18 from Chalkwell and wander from Southend Central to The Forum in just six minutes.
- Free wheeling
For those of you who prefer to use two wheels instead of four, there is plenty of cycle parking at The Forum. Just five minutes ride from Adventure Island, The Forum could be the perfect spot for a break and quick bite to eat if you’re cycling from Shoeburyness to Westcliff.
- A journey shared…
The Forum is more than just a library, so you don’t need to worry about being quiet all the time! Why not join with some neighbours to car-pool over together and take advantage of the parking available at South Essex College or at the ‘Lego Building’ in University Square?
The Forum is a great new addition to Southend. However you choose to get there, enjoy exploring!
