Electric cars have long been championed as a potential transport revolution, and following a recent United Nations conference on climate change, it looks like that revolution is finally about to kick off. At the COP21 meeting at the end of last year countries all around the world agreed to do more to reduce global warming, and the UK committed to ensuring that by 2050 all cars sold would be electric.
Southend is already well adapted for electric car use. As part of the EValu8 ‘Plugged in Places’ project, there are five electrical plug in points around Southend. The ports are located at Seaways car park, Warrior Square car park, on London Road near College Way, on Hamlet Court Road near Burdett Avenue and at the Belfairs Park Woodland Centre. In order to use the chargers all you need to do is join the Source East charging network by clicking on their website and paying a one-off £10 annual fee. After that, charging is free. Compare that to the price of petrol and you’ll see the costs of your car upkeep tumbling!
Even better, while your car is plugged in you can recharge your own batteries:
- If you’ve plugged in at Seaways you’re only moments away from the beach so why not take a gentle stroll along the seven mile sea front and enjoy the view as your car gets charged?
- The London Road charge port is perfect for a trip to The Victoria Shopping Centre. The centre has 45 shops and even a gym, so you can work out or shop till you drop safe in the knowledge that your electric car will be recharging while you’re busy.
- Charging your car at Belfairs Park Woodland Centre provides the perfect opportunity to get back to nature and learn about Essex’s fantastic ancient woodland. The centre is open daily from 9am-5pm and has a number of upcoming events for budding naturalists.
The electric ports around Southend provide the perfect opportunity for you to unwind as your electric car charges. From going shopping to working out, strolling along the beach to visiting a nature centre you’re never far away from something to keep you occupied while your car recharges.
