It has arrived! Real time bus information has now launched on selected services across Southend. This means the electronic display signs at bus stops are changing to give you a countdown of the minutes until your bus is with you.
Until the technology is adopted on all routes real time countdown information is only available on certain services, so you’ll still see the timetabled bus information you’re used to for some routes. And for now it’s only available at bus stops with electronic signs, but by the end of the year we hope you’ll also be able to get live updates using the SMS system in place at all bus stops by texting the unique code on the sign to the text number to receive a message telling you where your bus is.
Real time bus information is just one of a number of changes being introduced to help make travelling around town easier and quicker. You might already have seen the newly-branded iKiosks which also feature a journey planner to help you find the best way to get from A to B, whatever kind of transport you’re using.
You’ll also be able to tell more about where your buses are using QR codes and NFC (near field communication) before long.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How does real time information work?
Satellites provide up-to-the-minute information on the location of your bus and a computer on board works out the bus’s progress relative to its timetabled departure time. All this information whizzes to a control centre, which updates the electronic display signs.
Which bus routes currently display real time information?
A number of Arriva, First and Stephensons routes are now operating using real time information, and it will be rolled out across all other routes in Southend over the coming months.
When will all bus services have real time information?
We hope that all bus routes in Southend will be operating with real time information by late 2015.
Is real time information available at all bus stops along the bus routes?
At the moment real time information is only available at bus stops in Southend with electronic display signs. It is planned for the system to be rolled out to other districts during the coming months.
Are the timetables at bus stops now out-of-date?
Not at all, the real time bus information just shows you the bus’s progress relative to the existing timetable, so you can tell it’s on time and on its way.
