Did you know that 12-16 May is Walk to Work Week?
Organised by Living Streets as part of national walking month, the aim of the Week is to inspire people to discover the benefits of commuting by foot.
People across Southend are putting their best foot forward and getting involved, whether that’s businesses offering free breakfasts, foot massages and other treats to employees who walk to work, friends clubbing together to raise money for charity with each mile walked, or teams sharing photos of their walks on social media.
Perhaps you could make a pledge to walk to work for just one day that week, or every day if you’re feeling brave. You could encourage your friends and colleagues to get involved too. The Ideas in Motion team is on hand (and on foot!) with FREE pedometers to help everyone keep track of their journeys. In return, just make sure to send us your photos and stories on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #IWalkedToWork.
And if you’ve forgotten why walking to work can make you healthier and happier, here’s a reminder of three top benefits:
- You can lose weight. Walking for just 30 minutes burns 100 calories (that’s a Kit Kat to you and me). Read more.
- You can clear your head. Just half an hour of low-intensity exercise like walking can improve self-esteem, boost concentration and help us sleep better, as well as combatting tension, stress and mental fatigue. Read more.
- You can save some money. Walking is completely FREE. Why not walk for the week and then tot up how much you’ve saved? You could even buy yourself a treat with the extra pennies. Read more.
