It’s that time again, when we take some time to think about our daily habits and whether the ‘new year’ could lead to a ‘new me’.
For many of us, wanting to lose weight, save money and be healthy means that we dust off our gym membership cards, ditch the booze and buy a few new cookbooks. But changing the way you travel could be a much easier way to achieve your New Year goals!
If you haven’t made a New Year travel resolution yet, here are a few ideas to get your imagination going:
1.This year I will…protect my mental health.
It’s often a lot easier to focus on keeping our weight down than it is on reducing our stress levels but if we want to stay healthy this is just as important to focus on. It only takes half an hour of low intensity exercise to increase vitamin D and boost oxytocin levels, which help combat tension and reduce mental fatigue. So something like a simple walk through Priory Park can help to improve your self-esteem, boost your concentration and help you sleep better. A win all round!
2. This year I will…read more books.
We all know what it’s like to be the only one who hasn’t read a particular book. But rather than staying up late trying to finish the latest bestseller why not use your commute instead? By getting the train (or bus) to work you can get stuck into a classic, or even download free audiobooks from the Southend Library website so that you can enjoy being read to whilst you walk to work?
3.This year I will…visit new places.
They may not be the Taj Mahal or Great Pyramid of Giza, but Southend has lots of historic landmarks, museums, parks and woods that are worth a visit. Whether it’s the Prittlewell Priory or Southend Planetarium, so many attractions are easily accessible by public transport, bike or on foot. So why not put time aside just once a month and experience the best Southend has to offer?
4.This year I will…get back on my bike.
There’s nothing quite like the buzz of feeling the wind rushing past, as you and your bike nip past the traffic jams and arrive at your destination early. So this year why not get back in the saddle? If you haven’t cycled for a while our Learn to Ride events will give you all the confidence you need to get back on two wheels. For our female readers you can give your feet a treat by leaving your heels at the office while you wheel your way home.
5.This year I will…inspire others.
