“This is the Night Mail crossing the border,
Bringing the cheque and the postal order,
Letters for the rich, letters for the poor,
The shop at the corner and the girl next door.”
Travelling has inspired some of the greatest writing in history. From W H Auden’s The Night Mail to Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, there’s something about journeys that unlocks the imagination.
Following the success of our bus-based writing workshops at Village Green we are keen to do more to unleash the creativity within Southend and see how the power of poetry could help encourage people to think differently about how they travel.
In the next few weeks we’ll be launching a new Idea to inspire you to use your commute to get creative. And to celebrate the new Idea we’ll also be running a poetry competition, giving you the chance to win £50 of vouchers.
More will be revealed on 1st March so keep your eyes peeled, and in the meantime why not start flexing your artistic muscles with some practice poems?
