This month we meet Aimee Dowler, South Essex Active Travel’s digital marketing apprentice at Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.
- When did you start your current role and where had you worked before?
I started as a Digital Marketing Apprentice within the South Essex Active Travel team around a month ago now. Before I worked as a Sales Assistant for New Look in Intu lakeside, which I am continuing to do on a part-time basis.
- Why did you want to work in active travel?
I feel that something has got to be done about the volume of congestion on the roads, it’s insane and I want to contribute to making a positive change.
- What’s the best thing about your job?
Being able to interact with people and educate them about how a small change to their regular journeys can have such a big impact. People are so shocked when they learn the benefits of a bicycle ride or a 10 minute walk or catching the bus or train instead of using the car.
- What are you working on at the moment?
The South Essex Active Travel team are currently going through a major brand refresh, moving from Ideas in Motion to the new ForwardMotion brand. So that’s top of my list right now! Personally, I’m also in the process of starting my own lifestyle blog, although that will be a work in progress for some time. I believe at the moment there is not enough support and advice available for young people and that’s something I’m hoping to change with my blog.
- Tell us about an event that altered the course of your life/and career…
Getting my apprenticeship with Southend Borough Council. It was such a big achievement and I am so proud of myself!
- The person who has influenced you the most is…
My partner Liam. He’s so passionate about what he does and always pushes me to do my best and to achieve better. Not only does he inspire me, but he makes sure I don’t lose motivation when the going gets tough!
- Work life balance – what leisure activity you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy going out for food and to the cinema. However, I’m usually happiest at home watching TV and relaxing. I work two jobs so downtime is really important to me.
- Something about you people would find surprising…
I have had my braces on for 5 years and my littlest sister has never seen me without them. They come off in October and I couldn’t be happier!
- What’s your greatest fear?
Probably the fear that I will end up alone in life.
- Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
My grandad – he passed away when I was 8. I’d love to see how he is, what he has been doing.
Harris Nukem – an amazing photographer. His visuals are incredible and he is so talented at what he does.
IAMDDB – an incredibly talented musician. Probably my favourite female artist. She has a very unique perspective on life.
- What would your super power be?
Being invisible – you could do anything!
- What’s your favourite/least favourite food?
My favourite food is probably TGI’s Jack Daniels glazed chicken strips! I’m a super picky eater and there is a lot of things I won’t eat! The list would probably be longer than my arm.
- What’s the worst job you ever had?
Being a waitress at an Indian restaurant when I was 16. I was the only girl there out of about 20 staff. I don’t eat Indian food! I got the spelling of nearly every dish. It was a miracle the chefs knew what I was asking for.
- What thing would improve the quality of your life?
Having my own space. There are a lot of people in my house – it’s never quiet and always too busy.
- What’s coming next for you?
I’m hoping to start working on my blog over the Christmas period and hopefully get it up and running for January 2019!
