After two weeks of intense competition, the results are in. The judges have decided. It’s time to announce the winner of Southend’s Bus Balladeer competition.
We’re delighted to announce the winner is: Ray Morgan!
We were absolutely blown away by the standard of entries from all across Southend, but Ray’s poem really embodied everything that is great about transport and travel. The judges included the Mayor of Southend Councillor Andrew Moring; local poet and member of Southend Poetry Group, Adrian Green; and our very own Ideas in Motion Manager, Ashley Dalton. They were impressed with Ray’s ability to tell a story, providing the reader with a snapshot into her everyday commute but also a sense of the snapshots we can see of others’ lives when we travel by bus.
Ray has won £50 worth of book vouchers to put towards enjoying some more poetry and continuing to fuel her creative genius. We’d like to say a big thank you to all our entrants and we hope that everyone will continue to be inspired by the journeys they take around Southend. Although the competition may be over, you can still be a Bus Balladeer!
And here is Ray’s winning poem:
Aboard the bus
which lumbers and rumbles into view;
what daydreams we make through other windows.
Look up from the phone,
a space for thoughts to grow.
You look at people’s houses,
Whizz past and they’re gone, forgotten, lost;
until this time tomorrow.
