There’s nothing like the feeling of taking a deep breath of clean air, whether you’re strolling along the seafront or cycling through Priory Park, which is why it’s good news that studies show Southend has very good air quality!
The Council regularly measures a range of emissions levels across Southend, including nitrogen dioxide and ozone as well as CO2. The most recent report showed that air quality is improving across the borough and there aren’t any areas that need lots of work. However, the report did show that the main source of air pollution is road traffic emissions – responsible for 17% of all CO2 emissions in Southend – and the A13, the A127 and Eastern Avenue are the main culprits.
Improving Southend’s air quality is one of the things Ideas in Motion was created to do. By promoting sustainable travel, we aim to increase the number of people cycling and walking in Southend, enjoying the clean air and reducing the number of vehicles on the roads that contribute to emissions.
Promoting sustainable travel is also high on the Council’s list of priorities, working with local rail and bus operators and investing in transport technologies to improve the information available to travellers and help traffic run more smoothly through the borough.
But keeping Southend’s air clean and fresh is something we can all help out with…and as always, Ideas in Motion is here with a couple of ideas of what you can do:
Southend has miles of cycle routes to help you get where you’re going by bike, including the Prittle Brook Greenway and the cycle path along the seafront. There’s lots of cycle parking across the borough, and even when travelling through the town centre you can often get there quicker by bike!
As well as cycling, Southend has excellent walking, bus and train facilities. You can get a fresh perspective by commuting differently once a week, perhaps leaving the car at home, and getting some stress-free time to yourself!
