Car-free day was first introduced on September 22nd in 1999 to 92 Italian towns, 66 French, and the cantoon of Geneva.
What a way it has come since then!
Why is this day so important?
We’ve grown too attached to using cars, which are making our cities noisier, dirtier and far more dangerous than they once were. A World Car Free day allows us to see our cities in a different light, a better light. With a car-free day you’ll be able to experience how our city could look, feel and sound without cars.
Driving not only fuels an unhealthy lifestyle, it decreases the attractiveness of a city. Rows of cars sat in traffic is not a pretty sight, however people walking, cycling and hopping on and off of public transport together is. That said, car-free day is not totally about banishing the car, it is about reconsidering urban transport with the prospect of sharing streets more efficiently.
So lets see how our city could look with less cars on the road and instead travel in an alternative way. Having less cars on the road for just a day has surprising benefits, which makes this day really worth your while!
