There are many different ways to travel around Southend-on-Sea...
But most of us are stuck in the habit of using the car. We think it’s easier, quicker and cheaper than walking, cycling or using public transport… until we get stuck in a jam on our way to work or spend half an hour trying to find a parking space in town. That’s why we’ve set up Ideas in Motion – an initiative to reduce the number of cars on our roads and help make travelling in and around Southend-on-Sea easier, cheaper and healthier for everyone.
Did you know that most Southend-on-Sea residents who travel less than 5km (that’s about 3 miles) to work use a car or van for that journey? That’s a lot of traffic on the roads every morning, which is why Southend-on-Sea has an average speed of just 18.6mph during the morning rush hour – the lowest in the east of England.
This might not sound too bad, but congestion on our roads has a negative impact on jobs and businesses in the borough. Studies have shown that congestion is reducing access to jobs at London Southend Airport and in the town centre, and our economy is growing more slowly than the regional average.
